My 6 year old daughter came to me yesterday with her little ipod and a youtube video of a tap dancer.
“Look at this” she said. She was excited about the tap dancers and the sounds their shoes made and how they could dance so fast.
“Are you going to tap dance?” I asked.
“Mom, I don’t have any tap shoes.”
“You don’t need tap shoes to dance.” I said.
This little conversation got me thinking. We think we need everything in place to dance. We think we need the right skills, the right circumstances, the right time, the right clients, the right plan. We need the exact tools to move ahead with a project, a business or even a goal.
And this belief that we need everything to be exact can hold us back.
I’ve done this many times. I needed skills I didn’t have yet. I needed the words that I just didn’t know how to say. I need the courage to start, but there were always reasons, always excuses and always one more thing I needed for everything to be just so.
I was waiting for my tap shoes before I started to dance. In reality we just need to dance, we just need to start, we need to begin.
